Case Study One - Large Traditional Garden

This garden was designed and landscaped by Sandstone for clients in East Sussex.

Client brief - To convert the land of a former farmhouse into a family garden and rural retreat.

The yard surrounding this converted farmhouse was a blank canvas with no planting, terraces or lawns.
In order to create the desired garden, Ali Dempster was immediately struck by the fact that the beautiful converted sandstone building on three sides could form a natural quad.  With a large cherry tree sitting in the middle of the site Ali redesigned the area to contain two formal lawns and natural sandstone paving to mirror the existing building.

A large, low level deck has been built outside the swimming pool room, so when the doors are open this area can be extended into to the sunshine, for the family to enjoy. The four beds around the courtyard are planted with a mixture of deciduous and evergreen shrubs to give year round colour. The borders surrounding the formal lawns are punctuated with standard bay trees and box hedging while the long borders contain perennial planting to provide vibrant summer colour.

The centre bed surrounding the cherry is under planted with Hellebores, Snowdrops, Snakeshead Fritillary and a complete ring of Nepeta. The garden continues round to the front of the house where a large terrace, lawns and play area look out over meadows planted with native, specimen trees.
